Outstanding work by the team at MoFi, and the original production team.
This album, along with the MoFi version of the Cars' debut album are masterpieces - though they always do great work.
The SACD is a fantastic idea, it's a shame it didn't grow in popularity. Unfortunately, probably 80% of the general public have neither the critical listening skills, the necessary gear, nor the "ears" to appreciate DSD in all its glory.
I do wish MoFi would have included a digital accompaniment allowing those interested to also own the Remaster in DSD 256 (or at least 128) or to just sell the DSD 256 (DSF) files for these new remasters publicly.
That would be excellent. I've never heard anything better than the small handful of recordings currently available which were recorded natively in DSD 256. Hopefully, as the cost of computing power increases, we can see recordings in native DSD 1024, as well as playback devices. I fear we are some time away from that marvel, however.
In any case, this is a legendary piece of work from both the artist and the post production.

Edited 3 months agoI think I might actually prefer the 1999 SACD, but they are so impeccably close that it could almost be a placebo. I feel the "boosted treble" some people talk about brings out more of everything and makes it a more visceral experience than the MoFi and I don't really suffer from listening fatigue much, so it isn't a problem for me. Listen to the reverb in the vocals in "Human Nature" to hear what I'm talking about. However, the 1999 SACD is almost/over $100, and this is $30 new from Amazon. If you have a 1999, you don't need this. If you have a MoFi, it's not worth spending $100 for the ever so slight improvement. Both of them are better than the One-step in my opinion, which I also own.

The SACD layer of this and the standard redbook layer would sound indistinguishable to most ears. What people are referring to is this current 2022 MASTER being superior to previous masters. The SACD part is irrelevant.

As a semi-audiophile, I have flipped back and forth on whether or not some of these special, even "specialized," remaster and re-release projects are worth it...but when it was announced that MFSL was going to tackle this on SACD and LP for the 40th anniversary? I was sold.
I wasn't able to pre-order the disc, unfortunately, I was able to pick it up during the Christmas holiday of 2022-23. With the knowledge (perhaps insert air-quotes here) that the 1999+ SACD releases to that point had used a flat transfer of the master tapes, and with other audiophile efforts out there like an EQ Master tape that was digitized...I was emboldened and, frankly, expected that MFSL would knock this one out of the park.
IMO, I was right! To my ears, comparing primarily against the 1999 SACD and the early CD with pre-emphasis, which many claim is most similar to the original LP sound, I thought that MFSL was able to bring all the clarity of the (honestly, already seemingly perfect) flat analog-to-DSD transfer with a bit of the oomph from the original, more consciously pop and definitely not "audiophile" masterings of the album. I no longer listen to any other version of the album, and I recommend this release to everyone who enjoys the music--it's that good, to these 33 year-old ears. -
The SACD(DVD) sounds good. The disc is made in Japan.
All SACDs are made in Japan now because Sony wants it that way and it bottlenecks everything.

Edited one year agoHey! Audiophile here, but also a MJ enjoyer for almost 15 years. I know this album like the back of my hand, cause it is my favourite album of all time and one of the best (if not the best) albums of all time.
This is without a doubt (in my own opinion), the best sounding versión of thriller that exists. I've listened to every release (except vinyls, not a fan of those tbh), starting from the OG 1.st CD press, to the 1999 SACD, all the remasters and now the MFSL SACD; and my god, the moment I got to hear this release for the first time I was totally BLOWN away by how good Thriller finally sounded to my ears. This SACD fixed the boosted treble that is present in the first SACD, and took it to the next level by polishing and remastering all the songs, details and nuances from this album. I could even tell some details were trapped for decades! Michael's voice sounds so clear, a very well controlled bass with amazing detail, without sounding boomy nor interfering with the rest of frequencies, amazing mid range and treble in every song. The lack of "fun bass" could be a problem for some people, since they follow the golden rule and statement of "being a dance album", yet Mo-fi outdid themselves with this release! Hats off for them.
My personal ranking of thriller releases would be:
MFSL SACD 2022 > SACD 1999 > 1.st CD press.
Not trying to discredit the OG CD; it sounds great as well! One of the best versions to listen to this masterpiece, but at least for me the new SACD takes the throne as the definitive version. :) -

I can't believe some s here, who are saying they are not impressed and even prefer standard cd's. How is that possible? This is by far the best (SA)CD version you can get from Thriller. Mofi has done a great job, don't miss it!

1999 SACD was my pick before I heard this version. I came in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Both are good though.
