Edited one year agoAccording to mofi.com, this album was "Mastered from the original master tapes". However, as I understand it, this album was recorded with a Sony 24-track digital tape machine (DDD) which records in 16-bit / 44.1 kHz. Does this mean these digital multi-tracks were mixed to an analog master, and then MoFi converted that "analog" master to DSD? Seems odd.
Granted, I guess an analog master downmixed from multiple 16/44.1 digital tracks is better than a 16/44.1 digital master. Am I missing the point? Is this SACD still worthy of the price tag? -

I own both the 45rpm vinyl and the SACD. This is my first SACD purchase which I am using with a Marantz SACD10. It isn’t my intention to buy into the vinyl vs SACD war, but straight up, the vinyl obliterates the SACD. There is virtually no kick drum to be found anywhere on this disc. Yes the mids / highs match the vinyl, but the bottom-end is completely missing in action. Very very disappointed.

Edited 4 years agoInitial impressions after first listen:
Immediately I was impressed with how smooth this mastering is. I can turn it up loud and the highs don't fatigue. The mids have good detail and the bass doesn't distort or feel uncontrolled. This album is a few cuts above almost all other CDs I have, Dire Straits included. Mofi brought out subtle details that weren't something I noticed before, and playing Money For Nothing revealed the kick drum is cleaner and the highhat sounds like it should instead of hissy and sharp. The master is awesome!
Listening to the standard layer with a CAL Delta Transit, through a Sigma II tube processor, then into a NAD 1600, Yamaha MX-1 and finally through Polk SRS SDA speakers.
Edit: changed "mix" to "master"
