The target CD sounds more pleasant and smoother, that’s probably the best digital version available. This is too loud and harsh in my opinion, sold mine after getting the target.
-
I agree with comment below, sound quality is good, not great. And yes, way too loud. Not using any of the dynamic range that SACDs offer. I would not buy.
-
The sound of the DSD is good but too loud, it's compressed. That's not the " sound". Skip this version and just buy the vinyl, will sound better.
-
Edited 2 years agoI own the 45rpm Hoffman/Gray vinyl, and this pressing is by far the definitive version of this iconic album. So how does it compare to the SACD? The SACD & CD layer are both very good, though they can only match 80% of the 45rpm vinyl cut. I don’t have 5.1 surround sound, so I can’t comment on that layer. Nice try Warner, but no cigar.
-
Edited 2 years agoMy review is only for the stereo layer.
I think this SACD sounds identical to the 45 rpm LP that is almost universally praised. Both that album and this SACD came out in the same year, so they may use almost identical masterings. The only difference I could tell was in "Gold Dust Woman": At the beginning of that song, there is some hollering from an audience or from the band; on the SACD, that hollering has been removed. Other than that one difference, the 45 rpm LP and this SACD sound identical to me.
I praised the 45 rpm LP and I praise this SACD. The music explodes from the speakers. There is no distortion of any kind. The drums are propulsive, the guitar is sharp, and all the other instruments are easy to hear. Vocals are all clear and well-focused in the center of the soundstage. It's a very clean recording.
It's excellent. -
This entire series is quite exceptional and the few copies of this series that I own sound better than other SACD versions of the same album. They are dual layer disc as I have software that can pull the DSD layer from the disc before it converts it to PCM and it creates a lossless DSD High Resolution that I play on our Networked music server. The player tells you what format it’s playing and after striping the DSD layer from the CD, they show up as DSD on the screen of the player as a DSD file. That’s why I like these disc, but they only made a few of them.
SACD is a format that I always have to tinker with when I play it through our 7.2 surround sound system that we generally watch movies through. So, it is generally setup to playback DTS Surround Sound. I have noticed that when I play a SACD on our main entertainment system which is 7.2, I have to tinker with the sound as well as the speaker levels in order to get them to sound the best and to get the clarity to come through like SACD should sound. I think that’s why it’s not as popular as the stereo releases. It’s a format that appeals to a niche crowd who doesn’t mind fiddling with their system and then returning the settings back to a different setting that’s more suited for watching TV or Movies. I have to do this with all of my SACD’s which are mostly either Japanese or Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. Even single layer SACDs require this tinkering with the equipment.
The best sounding Surround Sound format that I own are the Dolby DTS DVD 5.1 audio disc. I don’t have to make a bunch of adjustments to my equipment to get it to sound like it should. It’s really a shame that the format didn’t take off as it’s an extremely good sounding format. Unfortunately there’s not that many releases on this format and the ones you find are extremely expensive now.
I haven’t been very impressed with the Pure Audio brand of 5.1 Blu-ray Disc either. I own a few other Blu-ray Disc and the best sounding one I have ever heard is Tom Petty - “Damn The Torpedoes” which sounds phenomenal and they give you a High Resolution of the album as well. It’s in a card sleeve that I placed the disc into a Japanese style CD sleeve for Japanese Mini LP CD’s to keep from scratching it up.
https://discogs.sitiosdesbloqueados.info/release/2585886-Tom-Petty-And-The-Heartbreakers-Damn-The-Torpedoes
This is the best sounding Blu-ray album I’ve ever owned. It’s crazy how many different versions of a single release some people own. I have five versions of this Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers release.
I was going to buy every release in this series, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet and everything is getting more expensive by the day. With the Japanese Yen way down, now’s the time to try and buy Japanese releases, but on Discogs they haven’t dropped the prices on any of the Japanese releases, they have actually gone up. -
I don't have a multichannel setup; so this review is only for the stereo layer. The DSD stereo layer is absolutely fantastic; I have heard many versions of this album and this stereo version is the best. I have the Bernie Grundman cut 45rpm and did a shoot out with the stereo DSD and the SACD was clearly better, which was a nice change because my experience is that DSD layers generally sound flatter and less dynamic than vinyl equivalent.
-
Having acquired the Elton John five or so studio albums in multichannel SACD format, I was expecting something approaching that quality of multichannel sound. Unfortunately, this disc sounds like someone put the stereo layer through a 2-->5.1 channel synthesizer instead of having the original multitrack mixing table tracks and putting separate tracks into the surround channels. More evidence of this is the deep bass levels still sound rolled-off like the mass released vinyl versions from late 1970s. The sound quality is also suppressed and thin sounding relative to a newly re-mixed multichannel release. If you're looking for good multichannel sound, I can't recommend this release.
