The mysterious Erykah Badu is one of the most interesting new soul stars from the information that around the turn of the millennium by broke. Her fourth album World Wide Underground opens onto the famous Motown but unlike forged soul pop from the sixties, with which this label became famous, Badu for a much freer form of soul, where elements of hip hop, jazz, dance, rock and dub. Already have songs like Back In The Day and Love Of My Life Worldwide hitpotentie certainly, the numbers are typically too long drawn out to a bite-sized pop record. Witness the album title and the consciously sloppy cover seems a while from the spotlights Badu to want to withdraw in the Lee do some playing around with new ideas. The result is a charming but also free cd with no obvious build-up, which sounds good but going nowhere. Erykah Badu remains an elusive phenomenon.
