Kid606 – The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You The Fucking Jams

This pressing is really nice! A couple gripes I have though is the fact that the first track on the CD, "sometimes i thank god...", is not present. Sure, it's just a short noise track, but I think it kicks off the album really nicely. Also, I'm a little disappointed that they chose not to include the whole 13 minutes of "this is not my statement." the extremely loud and distorted loop after where the vinyl cuts off, and then the fizzing, crackling and, finally, near silence really ends the album off nicely and is one of my favorite parts of the album. (also, on "mp3 killed the cd star" the DMX sample isn't there? maybe the vinyl was pressed before and it was added later, but, not complaining). Like I said, pressing sounds really good, and it's pretty amusing to have this stuff on vinyl. The Missy Elliott remix with like 20 other songs mashed-up into it is kick-ass, and the sped up D12 on the first track is really catchy. Really the only track I'm not too sure on at times is "rebel girl" but even that is a great track and flows nicely in the album. Definitely get a copy of this if you can find it.

the last track is a nice "remix" of radiohead´s "creep". an appearantly acoustic or completely new performed version with a cheesy background choir gets spiced up by some wicked laptop drum- and effect-sets. plus there is a loop cut in the mid of the song to make you go insane when you drop this and forget about this "feature" and to skip it manually.

Kid606 loves his noise-—and really, so do we. On his album THE ACTION PACKED MENTALLIST BRINGS YOU THE FUCKING JAMS, he runs roughshod all over pop music history, adding noise and distortion to a whole slew of artists. I think it might be more appropriate to think of this album as a one of unauthorized remixes, rather than an original. The problem that arises is that the strength of the track will depend on the source material. So when he takes on Soul II Soul and the Bangles in “Kiddy Needs a New Pair of Laptops” or Kylie Minogue in “Smack My Glitch Up,” the results are great. “Rebel Girl,” however, is completely unlistenable. Other tracks, in which he speeds up hip-hop to hardcore levels, work for the most part, but only become interesting when he throws in hits from the 80s (The Buggles, A-Ha, Yello) into his blender of noise. I especially like his deconstruction of Radiohead on “This is Not My Statement,” which continually repeats and filters the same phrase until it becomes a mantra, then a whisper and a buzz.

This release is <i>hottt</i>. A friend beat me to it at a nearby record shop and I've been trying to find another copy ever since. All the tight remixes of mainstream tracks will keep you entertained for hours and hours. I don't think there is a single bad song on this disc.

Call me a loser, but I really dig the remix of the old super-cliche Kylie track on this album. You realize what it is within the first couple of seconds, and then, you think "oh... my... god. this is actually pretty hype". Even the most avowed Kylie-hater can get down with it.
