I have to say this one of the Crown Jewels of my collection. Having been a Beefheart fan since the 70s I grabbed this when it came out. I have all his regular non bootleg releases and to be honest if I'm in the moody to listen to Beefheart I tend to play this before anything else just because this truly shows his personality more than any one of his single albums. The expression "Warts And All" comes to mind. On top of that the packaging is beautiful and stands out on the shelf. To think I originally grabbed it thinking it was an expanded "Trout Mask Replica", It's so much more.

From the formative years of a pre low- Beefheart in the 1966 demo of "Obeah Man" on the opening track of CD 1, to the instrumental complexities of the Gary Lucas rendering of "Flavor Bud Living" on the closing track 23, CD 5, this excellently produced and presented box set should enable every keen collector to up an awful lot of dots in the magical musical journey of the obscure genius that is Captain Beefheart.
This is a formidable collection of cuts, track out-takes, field recordings, enhanced CD video footage, snippets and mutterings, all cleverly herded together by the production team and ed by a glossy 112-page booklet of extensive notes & photos that provides invaluable insights in the machinations of the band's development. This retrospective project, thanks to Revenant's John Fahey, has enabled John 'Drumbo' French to dig deep among band member's memories to provide a fascinating historical document. A credit to French, and one he didn't get on the all-important 'Trout Mask Replica', which is just one of the key albums you'll really need to familiarize yourself with - along with the 'Grow Fins' title source on 'The Spotlight Kid' - before tackling this five-star cornucopia of delights.
The highlight for me is the Captain's rendering of "Orange Claw Hammer", accompanied by Frank Zappa on acoustic guitar. A duet by two alumni of the genre who's paths crossed so often, but were alike as chalk and cheese. Possessing this box set is not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that...
Not one for the faint-hearted.
