Released in 2004, CASTING THE STONES is the eighth studio album from Colorado Springs-based Jag Panzer. Their style is Maiden-ish, but with greater expertise, superior production, a more diversified & melodic vocalist akin to Nevermore, but without the gross melancholy. Iced Earth is a good ballpark comparison. They’re not hackneyed Euro-styled power metal, but rather refined American power metal with something sophisticated and unique to offer. They throw-in a few stop/start pieces, but do it in a fresh way.
While I like CASTING THE STONES a little better than MECHANIZED WARFARE (2001), the band improved upon their template with THE SCOURGE OF THE LIGHT (2011) and THE DEVIANT CHORD (2017). The slow-driving “Cold” with its catchy vox is a standout similar to the way “Union” is with THE SCOURGE OF THE LIGHT and “Dare” with THE DIVIANT CHORD.
Other highlights include the opener “Feast or Famine”; the following song, “The Mission (1943),” which was inspired by “The Guns of Navarone”; the notable "Vigilant"; the short & sweet “Achilles”; and “Battered & Bruised,” which features a nice drive with a stop/start riff thrown in.
The eleven tracks clock-in at a little over 51 minutes.
