I am one of those R.E.M. fans who like this album a lot! I know it is one of the 'less loved' or perhaps 'unloved' works in the band's discography but there are a lot of good songs here. It is a departure stylistically but there is a lot to like! I bought this way back and some time after its release. I was lucky to find a store in Illinois, U.S.A. (can't the store or town) which had a sealed copy. I had the CD version initially but I liked the album enough to 'chase down' the U.S. original vinyl edition. I don't know (does anybody?) who pressed the U.S. vinyl but it is really good without any noise whatsoever and the sound is up there too, a sonic delight on my system anyway. I was astonished to see what vinyl copies are going for but I won't be selling mine while I still breathe!

The songs on this Album are more vocal orientated. Michael Stipe carries most of the melodies with very clear lyrics that have a strong presence. The backing studio instrumentation is only there to the vocals. The Album cover depicts only one member of the band, Michael. Backing vocals are done by Michael.

I have an interesting variation cover and I was wondering if anyone else has this. It's similar except the band name and title are slightly more to the left and a tad smaller. The blurred photo of the band is also slightly more to the left so that the album title actually overlaps over the band photo (somewhat overlapping the band heads). Never noticed this until someone brought it to my attention. If I correctly, I purchased that via the bands website back in 2004. Anyone?
