It's one of the greatest albums ever produced. I can't "for the life of me" figure out how OG copies of this record went for so little, in the past!

Edited 3 years agoI can't for the life of me figure out how OG pressings of this album have started to go for higher numbers. This is a record that used to be in the discount bin at most places I'd dig at. For an album that was very popular upon release and somewhat ubiquitous, it sure is fetching nice sums. Further perplexing me is the fact that there have been so many represses and reissues of this on vinyl, as recent as last year's 50th anniversary pressing. Can anyone lend any insight here?

I have a copy of this with incorrect label on Side 1 - the label is for Side 2 "Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell Greatest Hits" HS-1695. Runout etchings on both sides match this release. I believe this would be classed as a "Manufacturing variation" but not sure if or how this would be added to the release.

Edited 4 years agoWhat's Going on is a beautiful album, and I don't use that term often. Every ounce of Marvin's heart and soul was poured into this album and it shows. What's Going on is not only a work of art, but a god damn masterpiece of musical genius. Everyone needs to own this album and learn from it.

My record (OG) sounds like marvin is singing through something! It's not very pleasant, almost anxiety inducing. Shame!

My copy is VG at best, but still sounds lightyears better than what you might be able to grab at Target. Definitely worth the extra cash if you wanted a piece of history and a copy that sounds fantastic but aren't willing to pay a for the original master reissue. A VG original copy should be in the ballpark of 40 bucks if not less. Happy hunting!
