Edited 9 months agoThis is the best mastered album I have ever listed to. Period.
I am not claiming to be the authority on the issue. I do not have even close to the largest collection of albums. But, I do own and have listed to, for example Rage Against the Machine s/t First Pressing AND the 2013 Bob Ludwig remaster from the original metal.
I posted a review in 2017, which you can see down below, but that was when I was just getting started collecting vinyl. I just had to come back with an update now that I have had more time to really appreciate how well this album is mastered.
Edit 8-29-2024: After further listening, I’m going to go with RATM as #1, but I love this master — definitely top 2 or 3 in my collection. -
Edited 2 years agoBought from Go Hastings back in 2007(?)/2008 (around then.) The box slipcase is very sturdy but rather tight due to each record having its own sleeve, and each one is a gatefold with its own specific art (the above pics are incomplete). The songs are spread out across all four sides, rather than like on the new pressings which contain everything on three sides with an etching on side four. The music itself is much less compressed so the dynamics are better with a slightly fuller bass response (but not terribly deeper than on the remaster). My copy is very centered so there is no warble or doppler effect (out of tune, sort of) but the new ones seem to be just as centered. I'd say the main differences are the expanded art, better packaging and the less sharp high-end than the remaster. I wouldn't pay the $200+ being demanded by flippers for this one, however. Buy the remaster, you wouldn't really hear the difference soundwise unless you actually had one of these to compare.
There is a slight amount of hiss between tracks, but that disappears when the songs begin. Five out of five! -
Sounds awesome, definitely the best sounding pressing of this album out of 4 I own, a must have if you love this album to death. :)

Yeah this sounds a lot better than other versions of the album. Absolutely worth getting if you can. That being said, it's not PERFECT and the wall-of-sound production is still very intact and of its time.

I recently started going through my record collection from High School and found this gem. I had forgotten how wonderful this LP sounded. Possibly my best sounding LP from this time period.

I'm backing kronius. Sound quality on this release is fantastic. This is the ultimate package, with in-depth photography and notes from the band included in the two large books included.

This record sounds incredible. If you want this album, this is the version to get. Much better sound quality than the other releases.
