Notes
Turnstiles is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, released 1976.
Joel's fourth album, released in May of 1976, and the first in which Joel uses his live backing band as studio musicians, which would be Joel's recording method until 1989's Storm Front: the album is also notable for being the only album to be solely self-produced. Unlike Joel's previous two albums, Turnstiles is musically and lyrically informed by Joel's returning to New York permanently after living in LA for several years, and as such, sets the formula for the rest of Joel's catalogue. Although the majority of the songs on this album have become popular songs over the yeas, Turnstiles did not sell well on its original release, and none of its singles ("I've Loved These Days") charted in North America or most of Europe: however, the album was eventually certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Despite not being released as a single, "New York State Of Mind" became extremely popular and, along with "Piano Man", emerged as one of Joel's signature songs. "Prelude/Angry Young Man" and "Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)" became live favorites, with the latter being included on Joel's 1981 live album Songs In The Attic along with "Summer, Highland Falls", "I've Loved These Days" and "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", which became a hit when the live version was released as a single.
Early promo videos were created for "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" and "James", the latter of which is available on The Essential Video Collection.
Along with the rest of Joel's catalogue, the album was remastered and re-released in 1998, including a multimedia component that included three live videos.

Includes "New York State of Mind", a song that became one of Billy Joel's trademark tunes, despite never being released as a single. Four of the eight tracks would later appear on SONGS IN THE ATTIC, and they tend to outshine the studio versions found on TURNSTILES. This pressing is acceptable...there isn't much oomph to the band, and the drums sound anemic, oddly flat...perhaps there's a reason why this was the only self-produced album Joel ever released. My copy plays nice and clean, with just a trace of occasional faint surface noise.

Edited 7 months agoLIstening to this now and boy, is it a 'hard' listen. To my ears there is distortion all over this pressing (and I'm no audiophile). BJ is a great singer-songwriter but to me this pressing does him and his music no justice whatsoever. IMHO avoid this pressing like the proverbial plague. Wet cleaned before playing.

Mine has the same Matrix / Runout & is made in Japan, but NO BARCODE.
I suspect that it's the first Japanese release. -
https://discogs.sitiosdesbloqueados.info/release/23338757-Billy-Joel-Turnstiles -This is my copy purchased today but mine DOES have enhanced content on it. 3 Live videos (New York State of Mind, Miami 2017 & Angry Young Man), all playable on PC using WMP. Rear of my copy is exactly as this one quoted with CDM code under the bar code. Should I change the entry or are some of this released confirmed to have no enhanced content? Can other s check their copies for the extra enhanced content please before I change the entry. Cheers.

Excellent pressing of an underrated Billy Joel album. Great low end on this copy. Highly recommend. -
For the most part this cd sounds fine. New York State of mind however sounds pretty bad in of quality. Not sure if this is a known issue with certain releases of this album but definitely worth noting.

The previous 3 albums all built on each other as Joel’s songwriting became more consistent. While I love Streetlife Serenade, I think this is his first great album. Strong effort start to finish and sets the stage for, arguably his greatest album, The Stranger and the run of multi-platinum albums to come.
I have a nice clean pressing of this and it sounds great. Quiet, nice separation, the vocals are very present. I’m guessing any of the first presses are going to be similar. Go get one in NM. Because of the millions of copies out there, up until Stormfront, exceptional copies of Joel’s entire catalog can be had at bargain prices. -

Blown away by the sound of this CD. As good, if not better, than the original US vinyl release. New York State of Mind does have a lot of tape hiss though.
