Grading/Rating:

Mint Vinyl:
I rate vinyl only mint when I bought it directly from the shop/seller & handled carefully.
this grade I use only for 100% top quality, definitely unplayed records.
most of my mint records are in sealed condition.
please note: not all new records are packed in "sealed" plastic.
a record that was played cannot be mint.
a cover with the tiniest writing on cannot be mint.

Near Mint Vinyl:
near mint is as good as new, rarely played (maybe never and I can't ), tiniest marks.
no creases in cover or sleeve.
the near mint grade should satisfy every critical collector.
as good as it can get for a record that has seen a record player.

VG+ Vinyl:
vg+ is my rating for a lovingly handled record
that has been played more than a dozen times.
with maybe some minor markings.
cover maybe has some edge-, ringwear or creases.

VG Vinyl:
vg is the rating which could be described as 'used'.
playable, visible marks or fingerprints,
surface noise apparent in quiet parts & lead-in & run-out grooves.
cover has been used, has creases, maybe some writing on,
if you want to play the record on a party to friends, fine.
if you want to test your hi-fi equipment, find a better one.
if you want a record as investment, find a mint one.

Good+ / Good Vinyl:
good in goldmine standard words to me means acceptable.
acceptable when you can bear scratches.
cover is torn or badly written on.

Generic Cover / Innersleeves
I dont rate generic black or white doublehole cover or sleeves.
writing on generic covers and sleeves doesn't count.
price-tag-rips on generic covers or sleeves doesn't count.

some remarks on general handling:
after adding a record to my collection (bought new or used),
I replace the standard paper inner sleeves with high-quality antistatic silklike sleeves
and replace the record in a separat generic cover outside the original cover and sleeves.
I do this for almost all my records (except for sealed records).

all my records are stored inside protective plastic sleeves.
