With the release of Starfish behind them, and the promise of commercial success at their door, The Church released Gold Afternoon Fix. Rather then returning to the format that brought them so much success with Starfish, they stepped back even further, returning to the musical grounds of their seven previous albums ... continuing to explore the psychedelic world of lush guitars and heavily textured sounds.
The waves of music and haunting verses draw the listen ever deeper into a mythological world The Church has been journeying through for quite some time, where occasionally they send us post cards in the form of albums, simply stating, ”This is what we’ve been doing, wish you were here.” Marty Wilson Piper and Peter Koppes tie all of these lyrical travels together with quivering guitars, and rhythmic heartbeat drumming, while Steve Kilbery delivers floating vocals across a liquid sky. The harmonies are smooth and consistently well thought out in their expression of time and space.
Wherever they are, I want to see that place, and if that’s not possible, then I’ll settle for hearing about it. Keep those cards coming boys, I can follow your meandering map …
*** The Fun Facts: Despite the album's title, Steve Kilbey was not yet using heroin at this point. He’d only started smoking, not fixing the drug. The title actually derives from a stock market term relating to the daily price which is set for gold.
