    If you really must have all the Basement Tapes recordings in one convenient location instead of hunting them down on numerous bootlegs (138 tracks!) then this is your go to six-disc set. Released in 2014, The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete has it all but there’s a lot of uninteresting (and at times unlistenable) material here. It’s not really until the third and fourth discs that you really get to the good stuff. And it is very good indeed, a milestone of the Americana genre. At the same time these are mostly the songs we already knew from the Robbie Robertson produced 1975 Basement Tapes album (with some fun alternate versions and takes).

    Discs 1-2 and 4-6 rarely deliver anything more than the sound of a bunch of drunk or stoned (or both) mates hanging around loosely jamming with results that, while historically and archivally significant, are simply not great (or even good) music. And this is from a diehard Bob Dylan fan who listens to everything he releases and has seen him in concert 12 times. ‘Sign on the Cross’ is an interesting precursor to his gospel years. ‘Get Your Rocks Off’ is a hoot. There’s a great cover of Johnny Cash’s ‘Folsom Prison Blues.’ ‘I’m Not There’ is something of a hidden gem with at least one great stanza.

    No I don’t belong to her
    I don’t belong to anyone
    She’s my Christ-forsaken angel
    But she don’t hear me cry
    She’s a lone-hearted mystic
    And she can’t carry on
    When I’m there, she’s all right
    But she’s not when I’m gone.

    I can’t explain the almost across the board 5 star reviews you find everywhere, except for the historical significance of the 1967 recordings and the ‘event’ of having them finally officially released in their entirety. Don’t get me wrong if we are talking about just discs 3 and 4, then yes this is masterful material. But taken as a whole collection this is, for me at least, the weakest of the Official Bootleg series.

      Nice to have a sprawling set like this on CD so you can easily skip right to the tracks you wanna hear or avoid several takes of the same song in a row.

        A listing here is not correct. It's a false claim. This entry should be deleted or at least ignored (https://discogs.sitiosdesbloqueados.info/release/11271731-Bob-Dylan-And-The-Band-The-Basement-Tapes-Complete-The-Bootleg-Series-Vol-11).
        There is absolutely NO counterfeit version of this particular volume in the bootleg series [The Basement Tapes Complete (The Bootleg Series Vol. 11)].
        The following is a list of counterfeit Dylan CDs that were made in China:
        Bob Dylan 1970 3CD;
        Bob Dylan Trouble No More 1979-1981 2CD;
        Bob Dylan Springtime in New York 2CD;
        Bob Dylan Rough and Rowdy Ways 2CD;
        Bob Dylan Shadows In The Night CD;
        Bob Dylan Fallen Angels;
        Bob Dylan More Blood, More Tracks 1CD;
        Bob Dylan ‎The Rolling Thunder Revue (The 1975 Live Recordings);
        The Complete Album Collection.
        NONE OF THE VOLUMES in the Bootleg Series with more than two discs have been pirated (in China).
        The most notable counterfeit CD sets coming out of China are the The Rolling Stones in Mono set (https://discogs.sitiosdesbloqueados.info/release/16943664-The-Rolling-Stones-The-Rolling-Stones-In-Mono) and The Rolling Stones – Greatest Albums In The Sixties (NOT yet listed on Discogs). A few years back The Rolling Stones – Greatest Albums In The Sixties and Bob Dylan The Complete Album Collection were sold in several DVD shops in Beijing. Now these shops are gone along with these two sets.
        P.S.: The second volume of The Rolling Stones – Greatest Albums In The Sixties (In Studio - Greatest Album From The '70s To '00s: https://discogs.sitiosdesbloqueados.info/release/8592316-The-Rolling-Stones-In-Studio-Greatest-Album-From-The-70s-To-00s-) set was NEVER pirated, there are not any counterfeit versions of this particular set. If you are a lucky owner of the stunning In Studio - Greatest Album From The '70s To '00s set, your set is indeed an original one without doubt.

          You know at first I thought I could live with the 3lp set which is indeed very nice. That was all thrown out the window when I really sat down and listened to the 6cd masterpiece! Incredible set, beautiful books, photos and of course the timeless music preserved in the best possible quality!

              I made the mistake of bringing this collection to a girlfriend’s house and now CD 3 is ruined and CD 5 is missing. If anyone out there would like to sell CD 3 and 5 for whatever reason, please message me. I really want these 2 CDs, so you name the price and I’ll pay it. I’m in The US. Thanks

                I've heard plenty of actual bootlegs of these recordings and they sound far superior on this release. I can't believe there isn't more buzz about this restoration. A whole new perspective on this set and a treasure trove of tunes here.

                  I've been toying with the Basement Tapes since I first heard about them … and I first heard about them in the mid 60's as holy grail rumors, circulating with the reverence of urban legends in Dylan circles. There were even bootlegged copies of those sessions floating around, with people merely hinting that they knew a guy who knew a guy who had heard them. There was one white jacketed vinyl version with a mimeographed flyer taped to the front [which I wish I still had], then there was a collection of rather poorly recorded cassettes, and finally, like the parting of the Red Sea, the Basement Tapes were officially released as a vinyl album. I everyone grabbing a copy, thinking that they were going to gain some personal insight, get clued in, understand the inter-workings, and perhaps the curtains would be parted, and Mr. Dylan would at last be revealed.

                  But truth be told, that grouping of songs were rather uninteresting to me, they certainly didn't reveal much I didn't already know. With more songs from these sessions surfacing as time went on, the one thing I became more sure of, was that the best material had already seen the light of day, and that His-Bobness, his mates, and his mate's heirs were certainly going to cash in on some serious bucks. And therein lies the joke of all time, much like the American Indians taking back all that was theirs from the white man, one dollar at a time from their casinos, Mr. Dylan found that anything he touched was gold.

                  Since those first Basement Tapes came out Dylan has been selling harmonicas he's used on stage, even if he blew one single note on them, for several hundred dollars, a signed one for even more [actually $5,000], and I haven't even gotten to the limited edition signed box set containing several used during full shows, or his appearance on Pawn Stars. I imagine him, Sharpie in hand, sitting on his bus rolling down Highway 61 to next town, a pile of harps in front of him, CNN on the tube, g late into the lonely night.

                  Well, it's been nearly 50 years since Garth Hudson so meticulously cataloged all the comings and goings that transpired during those heady nights in that Woodstock basement … and here we are today, people still hungry for anything that Bob Dylan has touched, and to that end, I hope that you enjoy it, that all your questions get answered, that the clouds evaporate, the curtains part, that His Royal Bob-ness ascends from your stereo and reveals truths, like old testament scriptures to your upturned face.

                  But I doubt that will happen …

                  *** Yes, the Basement Tapes have had a profound effect, they've sparked: One band called The New Basement Tapes, and well over 100 individual albums by other bands who refer to their material as The Basement Tapes.
