Edited one year agoI got some new speakers a few months ago, so I've been listening to some LPs. This week, I pulled out the original 1969 release of Uncle Meat to compare to some of the reissues. I was very disappointed with the mastering. Much of the album sounds anemic. Weak or non-existent bass, and overall (not all) but most of the songs sound putrid. A very uneven mastering, that I'm surprised Frank let it get out that way. I don't thinking these thoughts in my lonely teenage bedroom. Anyone?

Can somebody help me out? Can't find my "Uncle Meat"-LP here.
I bought it originally, but I can't exactly which year (way back !!).
It has the blue Bizarre label with catalog number 2024 and is in Stereo. Inside the gatefold it says "Made In U.S.A." at the bottom left. There is no booklet in it, it has black inner sleeves. I have looked at all copies here, even if they have a different catalog number, but I don't find anything. Is my copy that special or am I not looking well? -
This was a two LP version when it first came out but it was all put onto two regular length CD's: but there is only one standout actual music track and thats 'King Kong' coming in at 16:30 approximately total running time -and its in a bunch of parts like separate entities one after the other. Its a real burn from a musical point of view as if Frank Zappa was trying to berate people via the album-for buying the album. There are a whole bunch of Zappa "skits" (like small plays) strung together on the first three sides and the whole affair gets really old after about ten minutes of listening to two people repeating the phrase 'using a chicken to measure it' over and over again as if a conversation could be comprised of a series of meaningless questions and equally meaningless answers. Kind of a bummer I thought-maybe funny at first-but not after 30 minutes of it. This FZ communiqué from the often directionless counterculture he was part of won him a lot of strange people as fans but it also didn't win him many fans among the community of musicians. The guys in his band could play but they seemed to like to goof off more than anything. I think that this is the kind of record a lot of people would take back to where they bought it and ask for either a refund or an exchange when it first emerged. A rip off like that can hardly be said to be mocking blatant commerciality. FZ saw himself as a vanguard of creative genius-as if he represented "a kick in the pants of musical complacency"-but he was often the one being complacent. He did better albums later on-as in he was probably told to "shut up and play yer guitar" (the title of a later FZ work) or be 'set free from the burdens of being a recording artist.' Basically don't bother with this little piece of artsy-fartsy flotsam and jetsam unless you are a masochist. After being in the music business for decades FZ said that he didn't care if he influenced any subsequent generations of musicians. Probably because he had ultimately realized he wasn't really a positive influence.
