Story time: This album is how I got into Yello. As a 90s rave kid I was very hyped for the release of this, but not knowing who Yello were, I was obviously was more interested in the remixers than the remixed. But while listening to it, it suddenly hit me: "Hey, I know a bunch of the original songs from the radio! And they are awesome! I should check out what else these Yello guys did!"
The album itself, well, it's definitely a product of its time. A bunch of hard, fast, noisy rave bangers, that would make today's EDM kiddies drop dead from exhaustion. But also some more "serious" attempts at remixing Yello. Of course none of them really come close to the finesse of Blank's production skills, but it's very clear who did their tracks for the dancefloor and who did them out of appreciation.
Like every remix/tribute album, this one doesn't NEED to be in your collection. It's an interesting time capsule though. I would love to hear another attempt at this, but now with more "serious" electronic artists. (Don't think anybody wants a Steve Aoki remix of THE RACE featuring Pitbull or whatever.) But to fully enjoy HANDS ON YELLO, you really had to be there, I guess. -
Edited 4 years agoYou wouldn't want to on this: By that, I mean if you saw this on fire you wouldn't bother crossing the street to "" water on it. Unless, your tastes run to lazy, EDaM cheese; 'Hands Off Yello; A Cautionary Tale In Remixing' is a more fitting title. On the positive side, the mixes by Carl Craig and the Orb are OK, but more importantly this album shines a light on just how cool and innovative Yello's music is; some things are just best left alone.

As these are all NEW remixes, should the compilation tag be used at all? It's a remix ALBUM, so should the 'album' tag be used on all these versions instead?
