Na de oprichting in 1989 is de muzikale ontwikkeling van The Gathering uit Oss geen moment gestagneerd. Al bij het eerste album Always (1992) viel de groep op, door in een eigenzinnige variant van ‘death metal’ de nadruk te leggen op synthesizers. Met de komst van de geschoolde zangeres Anneke van Giersbergen in 1995 kwam de band in één klap in de de eredivisie van de internationale metal terecht. Op de albums die volgden kwam de nadruk steeds meer op melodieuze, atmosferische rock te liggen. In het kielzog van The Gathering werden ‘gothische’ metalbands als Within Temptation en After Forever uiterst succesvol. De muzikale beperkingen van deze scene begonnen de Ossenaren snel te benauwen, evenals de contractuele verplichtingen die ze waren aangegaan met Century Media. Souvenirs is de eerste cd die, na een zakelijk conflict met dit label, op het eigen Psychonaut Records verschijnt. Opnieuw heeft de band zich overtroffen met een overtuigende sferische rockplaat, waarin de sterke vocalen van Anneke van Giersbergen een absolute glansrol hebben. De muziek bevindt zich in het niemandsland tussen progressieve metal en alternatieve rock en kan zich in beide genres met gemak meten met de internationale concurrentie.
