Absolutely beautiful to be immersed in wintery nature while listening to The Mantle. An album I do not listen to often, but what’s here is perfection and when I do it’s an experience.
“In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion” is one of my favourite songs of all time. The sense of longing for a destination and finally finding it is so remarkable, and moving. “Odal” is a gorgeous instrumental. “I Am the Wooden Doors” is a driving headbanger including some beautiful melodies and lyrics. “The Lodge” is so icy, vigorous, and powerful. “You Were But A Ghost In My Arms” is hauntingly majestic, that gives me shivers when I hear whispers my name. “The Hawthorne age” is quite peaceful and relaxing. “A Celebration For The Death Of Man .. And The Great Cold Death Of The Earth” is crushingly depressing. “A Desolation Song” sounds as a credit roll for the album.
Over time, I have had many different interpretations of this album and what it’s trying to convey. I’d say it’s as simple as the quote on the CD. Although, the metaphor “Life is a clay urn on the mantle” still messes with me -
So what's the deal with the Grau thing? Did they just decide to print these on their own, or did The End make some licensing deal with Grau and John is upset because he's cut out of it? Bands sign bunk deals all the time and start yelling "bootleg" when labels do stuff like this because they legally can. Doesn't make the stuff bootlegs.

The "Notes" section states that there is a quote on the CD. However, the image of the CD for this release does not show the quote.
