Edited 4 years agoMy original UK press of this was in poor condition, and as its one of my favourites from Stevie, decided to this Mofi version. Absolutely thrilled with the quality, straight from track one. Amazing clarity to the instruments, and to Stevie's voice. Lots of subtle backing instrumentation, some of which is barely audible on the original press, is brought to the fore enhancing what was already a brilliant set of songs. Thoroughly recommended.

Would have to respectfully disagree with the other reviewer here. I'm no super MFSL fan and I've never been serious about tracking down their releases. But when it came time recently to replace my OG of Music of My Mind I decided it was worth going all in here. This is my second favorite Stevie album, so I'm really familiar with how it sounds on my various systems and setups. I believe this MFSL pressing is a step of from what I've ever heard previously (analog or digital). There may be a "lack of low end" but I believe this is intentional from the artist's original vision. Quite simply, the low end is sparse and more bare than Stevie's previous and later records.
This record is unique in Stevie's catalogue as almost ALL instruments were played by the man himself (which is an incredible feat).
This was a direction he started to take on the previous album, and his following albums he began collaborating again with other musical geniuses. As noted by the credits the only noted exceptions are the Trombone in track 1 and Guitar in the second part of track 2. It may not be a coincidence that the instruments fill the low end on these tracks. If you look at the other instruments utilized on the other tracks, you'll realize the low end is sparse. I think this pressing is true to that sound Stevie was going for. What MFSL gets right here is crystallizing the sound and bringing clarity forward to the other instruments behind Stevie. This allows you to enjoy the complexities and range he pulls off. Simply a stunning work of genius here. I think I've used genius several times here, but at the same time it's understated.
If you love this album like I do, then this is worth tracking down. Also would recommend tracking down a copy of Syreeta - Syreeta, which almost serves as a sister companion album. VMP did an incredible reissue as part of their Women of Motown Anthology set, but there are several versions out there worth getting.
Any questions I would be happy to respond to. Surprised I haven't seen more comments here. -
Edited 6 years agoThis MFSL pressing in no way improves on the original Tamla pressing. It lacks low end that the original has as well.
Thankfully, these days MFSL realizes that the only way to improve on OG pressings of albums is to spread them out onto 2 discs, preferably at 45 RPM.
