An underappreciated and ambitious work, and one of my personal favourites. Darker in tone than his other albums, and almost conceptual in exploring various themes (mostly pessimistic) about what America has become, ranging from the post-industrial depression of Allentown, the impact of the Vietnam war, and ends of a reflection of America's perception by others and the future of the American dream. When this album was first released, it had a huge impact on me, and years later still affects me emotionally. Despite being recorded digitally, it still sounds quite good on LP.
