Edited 28 days agoPicked this up today and compared to the Vantiva Miles Showell marble stone edition, this sounds "worlds" better (I say that with tongue planted firmly in cheek). The Showell cut, at least on the marble stone edition cut by Vantiva has inner groove distortion baked into the last tracks which does not happen on the inner tracks of this cut. So I am confused if Showell cut this too hot or if it's a pressing issue at Vantiva. This pressing looks off center on side 2, but I say it's only a slight off center as I don't hear any major fluctuations in the pitch despite the somewhat large sway. I don't understand how we are still dealing with off center pressings as well as other poor QC issues in this day and age.
I'd be curious to see if the Showell mastering is better and without distortion on the Optimal or Pallas pressings.
Listening on an ATLP120XUSB with a VM95ML cartridge. -

Edited 4 months agoIs there any evidence of or an interview where Robert Smith said he wants the album to sound brickwalled? I just don't buy that. Why put all this work into an album only for it to be kneecapped by this kind of mastering? I actually like the music but it becomes a fatiguing listen because it's so squashed. It may not be as bad as the most recent Tears For Fears album, but it's not far off.
Then there's a 2xLP version, raising one's hopes, but apparently Miles Showell was given the same lousy compressed files to cut from. Why? -

I gotta say, after reading reviews of this and the 2xLP I wasn't sure which one to spring for. I ended up going with this because I saw it at my local Barnes and Noble, and wow. This thing sounds amazing! Unlike a lot of other people here, my copy wasn't really dirty, just a bit dusty out of the paper/cardboard/whatever sleeve which I quickly replaced. You really have to turn it up, but once you do this kicks the absolute shit out of the brickwalled streaming and digital versions. Especially Side B, which is surprising given it's 25 mins of audio on one side! Bernie Grundman does it again

Edited 5 months agoSeeing a lot of complaints here how dirty the album is, freshly opened. Mine was dusty but not nearly as bad off as what I've seen of newer pressed albums. A quick clean off and it was good to go. Sounds pretty good. I think it may be their best album since Wish. So, so good!

I love the songs on this album, but the vinyl itself was visibly dirty straight out of the wrapper. I tried to run it through my Humminguru ultrasonic cleaner, but for some reason this album will not spin (this is the only album out of hundreds I've cleaned in this machine that won't spin). After manually cleaning the record with some Discwasher followed by a distilled water rinse, there are still numerous surface pops and noise at low volumes. Yes, I understand the nuances of vinyl, but this is a very poor pressing.

Finally a version of this incredible album that sounds great. This one is massively better than the 2LP half speed master which I also own and had high hopes for. Unfortunately I think I’ll just be keeping that one for the gatefold and poster. This is the version I will play. My copy was clean with no ticks or pops right out of the package.

Edited 5 months agoThe vinyl was very very dirty out of the sleeve. I had to wash it 2x via a 3 step process and it is still not perfect...ugh. This is my 2nd version and the first one was worse (returned). Is it the biovinyl that is the problem? I have heard multiple opinions. The band sounds fantastic btw. A rare sound these days and well appreciated. Another great decision was to keep this album to 8 tracks. Why overload the album with B-sides like what happened thru the 90s until recently. Just 8 awesome songs and you can listen to the entire album without taking a nap in between. LOL. Great record.
