Let's not get anything wrong here: the original "Gamemaster" is an absolutely classic tune, and undoubtedly an all-time top ten trance track. Yes, it does steal the riff straight from "Dreams", as many others have mentioned, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a good song.
However, is it just me, or is the Signum remix just really... bad? At least it's a disservice to the original. I don't really know what it is but I feel it loses at lot of what made the original so good. Definitely a turn off for me when I hear the remix on a mix album instead of the original, or at least Darey's bearable '99 Mix. I do find it annoying that it's the remix that got popular, as the original "Gamemaster" was about two years ahead of its time, and so when the on-time re-release came about with this remix as the A-side and the original as the B-side on the second disc, everyone used the remix. Even so, the original did make its way on to albums like Tranceport and Slinky, so I've still got those.
Even so, if you do like the Signum version, can we just agree to disagree? Although, I'd imagine that's a hard ask given the state of this comment section. -
Did Quench get any Credit / Royalties from the 10s of releases and 50 trance classic albums Gamemaster was released on?

I've never liked this that much, nor could I understand why it is held in such high regard in general. The whole speech thing is a bit cringey... I dunno. I guess this is a case in point of a 'classic' not really being as deserving of accolade as it's lauded to be. Maybe rose-tinted glasses, in effect.

Edited 4 years agoPlease learn how genres are formed before you start saying stupid things like "sampling is always cool." There's a big difference between sampling a riff and stealing an entire chorus. Quench - Dreams was a pioneering track that helped give birth to a new genre - trance itself. Any sampling of existing tracks was very minor and used to create not just a greater whole, but an entirely new genre. Do you understand how epic that is? Clearly not. Gamemaster is a remix. A straight remix of a masterpiece, without citing that masterpiece. That's all. Overrated mediocrity.

The Signum remix is an outstanding track, but unfortunately it's not mixed very well. Just sounds kinda of odd and out of place when you try mixing it with other similar sounding tracks from the same time period.

People moaning that ‘dreams was ripped off’ but they forget everyone was doing that in the 90’s it’s nothing new. I happen to like the dreams sample and it fits in with this great trance track.
The gamemaster sample is taken from Earth: Pleiadian Keys to the Living Library by Barbara Marciniak and works excellently here.
The Signum remix alters the track and gives it a new breath of life. -
Edited 11 years agoI lean towards the '99 remix myself. Very uplifting and inspirational track for the ages.

Wow there should be 100 Reviews for this album! Definately a classic track right here... I heard it back in '99 on an old "Dj Santana" cd.. Great melodic vocals and progression, very uplifting track. This track really makes you feel like you are in a wonderland of exquizit beauty. This vinyl pressing is a masterpiece.
