After he had made a clean break with its recording contract with Warner bombarded Prince through his website the world with new releases. It concerned mostly material he could not by contractual involvement earlier. The general public was struggling to handle the amount of music and Prince disappeared slowly in the Lee. The real fans know his music still. The Rainbow Children is an old-fashioned Prince plate with lots of jazzy funk and as usual inimitable message, proclaimed by an irritating, artificially reduced Prince voice. Who is not distracted by this tomfoolery hear a plate on which the catchy songs are missing, but the music still is worth it. As a bonus are two live songs added.

If you dislike Prince's missionary tendencies, this is not the one for you.
I have no problem with it - "preach on, brother", says I. Artists should talk about what they're going through, and if what you happen to be going through is a multi-religious blitz mixed in with some anti racist thoughts and a scenario of some digital utopia, who am I to judge.
However, if you like Prince's guitar work, boy oh boy are you in for the treat of the month. This is some Zappa level shit. In a way, on the guitar front specifically, this is probably the best Prince album I've heard.
It's diverse, more jazzy than usual, very rock, with quite a few classic Prince funks thrown in for (very) good measure, and some soft and groovy R&B seduction songs as well, of course.
All in all - I can't imagine any Prince fan who wouldn't love it. I think that in this one he actually lives up to all of his potential.
