I'll be honest, I do not own any record with this much obvious distortion. I presume the original masters were recorded too hot and isn't a reflection of this pressing.

The pressing itself is mediocre. Nothing to write home about. I have other applause releases and none of them are very good quality. Rumbling vinyl and ghosting between tracks.

That said, the session is fantastic. What an energetic combination of Lee Morgan in his prime, Wayne Shorter ramping up to be a star, and sensei Blakey behind the kit! Both horn players are taking chances, which is the essence of improvisation. There's also a fair bit of wholetone scale tonality, for that extra floatie sound.

...there are no dates on the label of this pressing but the sleeve has ‘1981' on it.

The description on this release needs to be amended. The release date for this Applause LP was 1981, not 1969. Applause records didn’t exist until 1981 and was a short lived label.
