My record has Bob Seger's "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," not "Heavy Music."

A hit and miss collection of some of Detroit's better rock and pop efforts from the late sixties. Six of these selections are classics to my ear. The Rationals' "Respect" is a very clever reworking of Redding's classic soul song into a gritty, white boy rock and roll tune. The SRC's "I'm So Glad" may be one of this band's best recordings. I still submit that their version totally undercuts Cream's. "Heavy Music", like Seger's "East Side Story" is essential early Bob Seger, years before the Silver Bullet Band.

The Amboy Duke's classic psychedelic hit, "Journey to the Center of the Mind" had to be included in this collection. The MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" is classic hippy dippy counterculture noise. Seems rather silly after all of these years. Mitch Ryder had a legitimate hit with Lou Reed's "Rock and Roll" and it is solid in its execution, although I much prefer the Velvet Underground original.

And the label, "Seeds and Stems", has a nostalgic ring to it. A nice compilation that could have been better.
