Edited 10 months agoBeautiful flat and quiet pressing for me. Very punchy and dynamic too. No distortion. Maybe I was lucky. Great record and the gatefold is stunning too.

My copy lacks the glaring issues some folks had (warped disc, frequent distortion) but overall I’m not impressed with this as a tone poet series contribution. Some light distortion pops up every now and then, though in a way that I can’t say If it’s a recording issue or a pressing/mastering issue. It also lacks the “wow” factor that the better tone poet releases have left me with. Purchasing at a markdown or a sale, I would recommend since musically it’s a great record and ultra pleasant, but from an audiophile perspective there’s much to be desired

My copy has lots of distortion, for instance trumpet blast at 1:20 and piano note at 1:24 on the first track. super crunchy. i thought it was a pressing issue, will try to return it. Very disappointed as all my other TP releases have been excellent.

Mostly quiet pressing. I don't hear distortion. To me, it sounds pretty good. Narrow soundstage. Piano tone could be more forward and vibrant. Musically, I find the whole performance lacks charisma, some sort of undefinable quality that says, "Hey, listen to this, this is something really special!" I actually think Mobley's compositions are quite good: interesting and entertaining. I disagree with a previous reviewer who finds that Dorham steals the show. Mobley steals his own show with a quiet and sad rendition of the standard "Deep in a Dream". I have listened to this 4 or 5 times now, and I like it more now than I did after the first listening. As a previous reviewer speculated, it does seem to be the type of recording that grows in stature with familiarity. I really have to hear "Soul Station" soon and perhaps that will make me think more highly of Mobley.

After finally saying “never again” to the classic series after wayyy too many returns from non- fill, i find this tp yo sounds pretty good, I’m happy with it. Good vibes, nothing too fancy and I’m all for it.,

Pressing wise i got lucky first time, which has not always been my experience with the TP's (and far more so the Classics). So im really happy for that!
Its all abit meh in of music and mastering. Mobley did FAR better work but its still enjoyable if abit fade into the background because none of it REALLY stands out and DEMANDS my attention. The mastering is mediocre its not great its not bad its just servicable. Musically its better than the Tone Poets ive ignored but of those ive collected this is a lower ranked one atm. Maybe a few more plays and it will grow on me as often happens! -
After reading the previews I was scared to buy this record, until I stumbled upon a Black Friday promo and got this one for a fair price. I'm glad that happened, because I got a brilliant copy. I don't hear much of the distortion, and if there's any, it really doesn't bother me. I have to say I play with a quality DJ setup, not an audiophile setup. I'm very happy with my very first Tone Poet record !
