When I revisit albums that either resonated with me or spent a lot of time with me in the past, I tend to put on the nostalgia glasses and hail it as a masterpiece. But for this record, with all due respect to everybody else’s opinions, I have no need to do that. Bruce’s playing is as hot as ever. Paul’s singing is absolutely amazing and the lyrics (mainly Gene’s) were cheesy, but fun and nonsensical. Eric’s one lead vocal spot on the song “Little Caesar”, is great. I love every track on this. If you’re a fan of 80’s cheese and you haven’t heard this, consider doing so. It will NOT disappoint! For the others, whether they’re diehard 70’s fans or fans of everything except the cheese, they wouldn’t enjoy it (and most likely DON’T) as much as I do. Some standout tracks are the singles (“Rise to It”, “Hide Your Heart”,” and “Forever”)”You Love Me to Hate You” and “Somewhere Between (Heaven and Hell)”.

I have to agree with the majority of others here and say that this is one of their weakest efforts ever. The two new tracks on the previous "Smashes, Thrashes and Hits" album before this were unfortunately a sign of things to come. Paul credits himself with keeping KISS afloat during these years when Gene was distracted with other things, but in reality, his songwriting makes him appear just as detached. Tons of corny sexual innuendo in almost every song, and zero energy whatsoever. It did spawn a massive hit in "Forever", and let's not forget the video for "Rise To It" which had Gene and Paul back in makeup, allegedly to satisfy the fans who wanted to see them in it one more time or were longing for a reunion (that thankfully did eventually come).
The production is absolutely awful on this. I know they were pitching it as a "raw, back to basics" record at the time, but it really was a bunch of demos that they tried to shine up. I had the misfortune of buying it on vinyl, which made it even worse. It had as many tracks packed on each side as a K-Tel compilation, so there was zero fidelity whatsoever on top of a completely flat production.
Ironically, the tour for this album is widely recognized as one of the best ever for the non-makeup period. The set list was fantastic, drawing from all eras, and they had a huge production including "Leon" the Sphinx. Awful album, fantastic live show. -
they weren't even trying at this stage. all the energy was gone .boring record. probably their worst
