Ok, I'm split....with VMP going under i wanted to snag this 2nd hand before the VMP stuff skyrockets due to there never being another pressing.
What everyone below says is correct for me. The packaging is amazing and definitely a collectors item for "The Doors" fans. Now the record itself have a lot of distortion on the treble (no I do not have a Mono cart but am about to upgrade my table and will have dual tonearms and one will have a Mono cart for albums like this.)
I also have the AP 45rpm and Rhino Hi-Fi copies. Stereo is the way to go. BUUUT for some reason I kinda like the grit and crappiness in this sound....I don't know why but to me it adds a harshness and brashness that kinda works. I imagine back in the day playing this album on worn out needles, with half blown speakers in a basement, this is how it sounded.
So I guess my take is, if you want clarity, audiophile perfection, look elsewhere. If you want some grit and almost nostalgic roughness, get this. I don't know. I added this to my collection as I had always wanted it, fully well knowing it would sound bad, but crazily I like the "badness" of it. And who knows what a Mono cart is going to do. This is a pickle for me for sure. I expected to hate it, but i guess it more boils down to, I kinda hate how much I like it... -
The presentation on this is undoubtedly beautiful and I ire the effort put into that, but this doesn't sound great. I'm not even speaking in of comparison to the stereo. A beat up original mono sounds much better. Jim's much closer, Densmore's kit has some air, etc. However if you like the mono mix and want to have it on vinyl this is probably your best bet especially if you want a really clean copy. If you are ever able to own an early mono though, for a decent price, it's worth it. Mine's like G+ and still plays really well.

Edited 6 months agoI was initially a bit disappointed with this release, and it has been shelved for quite a while. Today I fitted an Ortofon 2M Mono cartridge and am giving it a run out, actually it is sounding really good to my ears, previously I had turn it off after a couple of tracks. I’m not getting noise, distortion or sybillance - the inner groove part of the record sounds clean.
I found that the snare drum on Light My Fire was a bit mushy, there is a lot of reverb on it and it doesn’t sound great. On the stereo version the snare is all in the left channel and nicely separated from the rest of the noodling. I compared the this mono vinyl to an Hi Res mono stream , and found the same problem with the mushy snare. -
This sounds bad... really bad. I'm usually willing to bend for Jim and the boys but this time, NO.! It's a shame because aesthetically, the presentation is gorgeous with a thick, glossy, tip-on jacket. You get listening notes, an art print, a French E.P. and the galaxy green vinyl matches the cover art beautifully. If you have one of those "Now Playing" record sleeve display stands next to your turntable as the vinyl spins then this would look uber-cool to anybody walking into your listening room. It's such a bummer that the record sounds like shyte. If Bernie Grundman didn't have a decent mono mix to master then he should have stuck to the stereo one because, believe me and others on here, who say that this sounds pretty darn awful. I wanted a mono mix as well as my stereo one, but not when it sounds THIS bad.

SAME MASTERING THAN 2009, CHECK OUT WHO DID LAQCUER CUT, the Great Bernie Gundmann, unfortunately they had a worn out shitty tape, they did the best because only a miracle can revive that album

Edited one year agoI have to laugh at the positive reviews. Do you all know what a good sounding record actually sounds like? This mix is mostly a novelty at this point. Not AT ALL comparable to the AP stereo version. FWIW, I have both this one and the Rhino, and I don't care to listen to either of them a second time. Neat to have, but if I could only have one copy, it would definitely be the stereo mix.
I will it, this sure is an attractive copy. I quite like the shade of green used, and the labels are a nod to 60s WLPs. The jacket is thick, glossy, and feeling. It's a shame they couldn't cut a 33rpm stereo version from tape instead. -

This beats the Rhino mono pressing, hands down, but I think the Analogue Productions stereo is still the best modern pressing to be had.
-
This pressing is the best mono out there, compared to acoustic sound’s 45. It has a super deep sound stage with that classic mono sound, much more cohesive with great instrument separation, low noise floor. A must add to any Doors collection.

Superb edition aesthetically. My copy plays fine (I personally like the powerful bass in the mix), given that this is no audiophile recording to begin with. Very satisfied with this purchase.
