Notes
First pressing with Enterprise blue square logo, label variation of Isaac Hayes - Shaft.
Comes in a thick cardboard gatefold sleeve.
Music from the film courtesy of MGM Record Corporation.
Enterprise Records, A Division of Stax Records, Inc.
Runout's variant w/ label variation w/ type setting.
The tracks as printed on the back cover are in different order on the records. For Instance, "Do Your Thing" and "End Theme" are listed as D1 and D2 on the back cover, but they actually are on side 2 of Record 1, which should make them B1 and B2. However, as this was pressed as an auto-coupled format 2-LP, playing them in that order would have the track order correct on the cover.

Edited one year agoI have recently bought a copy of this album. It is definitely a 1971 Stax UK release. When I came to add it to my collection I noticed that the publisher is MS then under that Island Music Ltd. These are in the same position on the bottom of the label as with the other 5 UK versions.
Also the matrix run out is different. Can anybody throw light on this or advice and a quick way to add this as a new version? There is a lot of info to do this from scratch! Thanks, Dek

The soundtrack was nominated for an academy award for Best Soundtrack. AND... it won a well-deserved academy award for Best Original Song.

Awesome movie soundtrack from a film I've actually never seen, performed by the guy who did the voice of Chef in 'South Park'. That theme tune alone is guaranteed to get your body moving, and even spawned a cover version from Bart and Lisa Simpson.

Regarding the vinyl versions of this, avoid the US 1st pressing. From what I have been read, it was mastered way too hot and in your face. The UK and West German 1st pressings get the most raves in of the original vinyl. The 2014 Stax/Concord reissue 2LP sounds great as well. That one really surprised me. I posted a separate review for that version. I also picked up the Stax/Fantasy reissue LP of "Hot Buttered Soul" (the one that sells for like $20). Great sound on that as well, especially considering the price ("Walk On By" sounds wide, airy, open, and engaging... Really draws you in... Great lead and backing vocals). I plan to get the Stax "Black Moses" reissue as well, and hopefully it's as nice as the "Shaft" set. I played both of them on an idler-driven Dual 1019 from the late '60's, and they responded nicely to it. Should do well on tube AND solid state gear. You won't find much real info about these reissues online, aside from the general stuff. No big write-up about how they were mastered or how heavy the vinyl is, but don't sweat it. Mine sound great and play quiet (The "Shaft" reissue seems like a legitimate 180g HQ release, with a nice, high-quality gatefold cover, faithful to the original in of its feel... The "Hot Buttered Soul" reissue has a single, non-gatefold-type cover that is more in line with its price, and the vinyl seems to have a slightly-lighter weight/feel to it, but it was well-centered and quiet. No complaints on the sound.
