Tripped over this from Santa Monicas KCRW online archive stream of Deirdre O'Donoghue soundboard recordings of SNAP. All the songs sound exactly like pure uncut 80s coming of age and romcom movies.

According to Sal Bernardi, "Theme for the Pope" came out of Quebec. In fact, the original lyric was in French. Denise LaBrie, a Mona Lisa-looking girlfriend, helped him write the lyrics. A few years later, someone in the film business approached Rickie Lee Jones about providing a theme song to The Pope of Greenwich Village, a movie about Italian-Americans. Given that the song already had a European feel to it, Sal recommended it to Rickie, and she thought it would be perfect. So they did away with the French lyric and cut an instrumental demo as an outline. The film people ed on it, opting for "Summer Wind" by Frank Sinatra instead. If you're gonna lose out, you might as well lose out to the best. In the end, the demo wound up on The Magazine, thus the title "Theme for the Pope". On many non-US LP pressings of the album, lyrics were added, once again in French. This time written by Boris Bergman, who is somewhat of a celeb in Paris. Collectors take note: the only legit CD to contain this "oddity" is the Japanese mini-LP from 2012.

Big RLJ fan here and I love her first two releases. This one is special for me because she had cleaned up by this time and it is so apparent in the clarity and power of her voice. As always, fantastic songwriting, arrangement and performances by her.

An underrated album. Maybe it came off as pretentious in 1984, but its crisp and funny today. Great recording, production, and musicians too. I love it.
