This is the greatest jazz ensemble ever. Yes, better than the one that recorded Kind of Blue. Can you seriously compare Red Garland to Herbie Hancock? I'm tired of this group being referred to as "the second great quintet". This is modal jazz chamber music, especially ESP, Nefertiti and Prince of
Darkness,
which showcase Wayne Shorter's genius for composition. And the interplay between five great musicians is virtually telepathic. There's a lot of previously unreleased stuff on here -- like Side car and Circle in the Round -- that you can do without. Go buy ESP, Nefertiti, Sorcerer and Water Babies. They've all be re-released on 180 gram vinyl.

Certainly a beautiful looking set. I wish I enjoyed this music as much as I enjoy Kind of Blue or say some nice cheesy 80's pop.

One of the, and perhaps the best jazz box sets ever. Any serious Miles or Hancock or Shorter fan should have this one. Six CD's with a seemingly endless flood of music. Davis is the genius behind the bands search for a balance between traditional (hard) bop and avant garde and free jazz. Perhaps the gradual changes in style over the years this set of recordings spans, are mostly along the compositional shifts with the group. Whereas on the first three discs you'll find predominantly Shorter compositions, you'll find titles from Davis' hand. Of course four of five from this band, would go on to record Bitches Brew, subtitled: Directions in music by Miles Davis. But one should not mistake "taking control" for the desire to create a compositional basis that allowed musicians as much freedom of play as possible and expand their individual horizons. And then one also can find the introduction of new instruments like the Fender Rhodes Electric Piano and the electric bass.
In all it's more than just a box set which in itself is as complete as the producers could have possibly made it. Not one take of interest was left out. It's an experience to listen through all the CD's, sometimes dreaming away while reading a bit from the story behind it all in the enclosed book.
