This group from Athens created single-handedly the sound of the eighties, with a mix of the typical rhythm of The Velvet Underground, the Rickenbacker-jengelende guitar playing of The Byrds and their own charismatic vague vocals. Many bands followed their example. But even then the R.E.M. sound the standard became the lucrative "alternative rock"-genre refused the group. The band continued to change and develop, without ever letting go of their undergroundprincipes. In one way or another in the course of time they were superstars, but also this changed their surrender to their music does not. In 1997, drummer Bill Berry left the group, but Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills continued to persevere despite his absence. In september 2011, the band was raised.
