Must be an age thing, but when this originally came out in '81, I didn't like it that much. Thought the bass was too much, and the longer tracks were too long. However, now I'm in my mid-50's, I really get it

The additional tracks added to this repress make it just about complete. And the sound quality is perfect for my little set-up

In addition to what others have said, it's very significant to note in one article I've just read that the compression of the album (running time of 50 minutes originally) onto two sides in 1981 caused a compromise to the sound. I DO that being the case. I bought it on the day of release with a birthday token and was rather underwhelmed by it. Not exactly the most exciting album to play when it's your 15th birthday (and actually it wasn't a happy period for me so its low-key, sparse sound was depressing, have to say). Course I've grown up and am in a better place mentally now!!
Anyway not only do I dig this album more these days but this remaster, over 35 years later with the luxury of four sides of vinyl, has made all the difference. I'm rarely, if ever, in favour of remasters of any release prior to the compact disc era but this is a great improvement.
If I was to be slightly picky, the mastering compression has made one piece of percussion on Night Talk stand out rather too much (typical of remasters, I find, they just leave it set globally but it doesn't work for each mixed track!) but hey, I'll accept the compromise!
WHAT AN ALBUM! What impresses me most now is Gary's vocal performance and his feel for the exotic groove going on at the time. Yep we have his customary overshooting or underhitting some notes, smoothed over (just) by the double-tracking, but he's definitely on form I think.
So much to say but I've said enough. Four out of five simply because I only save 5 for utter masterpieces and it ain't quite. But excellent piece of work and very unique.

How many copies are there in the limited edition? Anyone know.

Updated rating from 3 to 5 stars. This is an excellent, dead-quiet pressing. Excellent mastering and sound stage.

Brilliant album. Numan sounding much like Japan here throughout, even on the tracks that Mick Karn doesn't appear on. Great reissue that includes extra tracks and is spread out over two discs. Pressing is quiet and clean, dynamic, and warm sounding. Disc two isn't quite flat with my copy, but fortunately doesn't effect play. This Limited Edition double LP on colored wax in a nice solid gatefold is a no brainer at under $30 which it's been selling at for quite a few years now. Wish the contributors of this page didn't do the old copy and paste here because with this 2xLP version the credits are now mostly wrong (ie there is no Track B5 or B7 etc). Great album though and worthy of your collection, whether they pressed 500 copies or 5000.
