Edited 4 years agoMade as a ion piece after completion of The Beatles Anthology set 'Flaming Pie' is contemporary McCartney at his peak. Featuring recordings from as far back as 1992 and songs written before then the album is a whirling tale of past memories, intimate moments and teenage dreams all wrapped up in a collaborative mix featuring a good number of his peers.
Gone are the uber cheesy moments of the 80's and in it's place are sombre acoustic drifts accompanied by a small classic backdrop that is as close to the bone as his past work can get. Enclosed within this collection of gems are 'The Songs We Were Singing' which documents Paul's purest moments with late Beatles band member John Lennon, the hauntingly fragile 'Somedays' as well as the jaunty closer 'Beautiful Night' followed by it's humble epilogue 'Great Day'. Many of the songs come with their own set of special guests, including fellow Beatle Ringo Starr, the legendary Steve Miller, the masterful Jeff Lynne and even an appearance by Paul's own son James, making the record something of a family affair with Linda providing back vocals in places.
The only sore thumb in the lot is the song 'Used To Be Bad', which offers up an out of place bravado that doesn't quite hit the mark and would have probably been more at home as a part of the Fireman side-project, but even with the cheeky title track knocking hard at the door of satire, 'Flaming Pie' is well worth hunting down as it provides the last glimpse into the life of Paul McCartney before his world was once again turned upside down. By far one of his best works to date and certainly the last of his album's to really hit the mark 'Flaming Pie' is a worthy slice of 90's pop rock and a must have for fans of the artist as well as The Fab Four.
