Gary Burton / Chick Corea – Crystal Silence

An ECM Jazz classic. Beautiful interplay between these two. And this later pressing is nice!

Placed this on the turntable at midnight, and it's such a perfect late night album. The whole thing is something of a mood piece, very stately and elegiac. "Señor Mouse", "Desert Air", "What Game Shall We Play Today" and the title track are similarly excellent, the weaving of piano and vibes creating a relaxing and contemplative atmosphere. This pressing is excellent, the soundstage is open, sparse, and spacious, instrumentation is crystal clear. My copy is in beautiful condition, the vinyl is very quiet, looks and plays like a new slab of wax. Good stuff.

A true gem from ECM - for fans of Chick Corea this is a must have! Another Japanese pressing by Trio/Kenwood plant which is well known for super quiet noise free virgin vinyl pressings.

There are few instrument pairings more pleasant than vibes and piano. :)

I'm a huge fan of the melancholy mid-70s ECM releases, such as Abercrombie, Towner, Metheny, Burton sounds. I also love Chick's solo piano work, and this duet is reminiscent of the great Bill Evans/Jim Hall "Undercurrent".

If you're like me and you gravitated toward the obscure Michael Gibbs and Steve Swallow areas of your Real Book, this is a safe space, as those tunes reside here.

Sonically, this sounds nice. The instruments are tracked cleanly, however there is intermittent clipping on piano transients. Pressing is good. Recommended.

Although this is a reissue, it sounds better to me than the original Polydor pressing, which is dark by comparison.

Good album. Nothing incredible, but there are some nice vibraphone sounds, and it’s occasionally pretty groovy. Got it for shop resale, and while it’s pretty ok, it’s nothing I would buy for myself. Overall, while pleasant in peaceful in tone, the record tends towards the repetitive and boring. Lack of variation is largely the problem, synthesizer and vibraphone can only do so much, and the album doesn’t really explore the artsy side of either. I feel like this could have been really interesting. It’s just not. 4/10

This is a wonderful recording and it is a great start to get into the atmospherical jazz world of ECM. The recording is immaculate!

Wonderful album by two Jazz musicians at the top of their game . . . a Cool Jazz classic but fans of all types of music should be able to appreciate this. Very well - recorded as is the hallmark of ECM albums . . .

Gary Burton and Chick Corea should be separated into two distinct artists.
