I have to say... although this is a sublimely simple instrumental classic, either the UK 7-inch single was appallingly badly mastered, or the record producers must've had cotton wool in their ears. Hardly any treble, and the whole thing sounds like you've got your head under a duvet (= comforter, I believe, in the U.S.).

Haven't heard the injection-moulded UK 7" nor the 12-inch, so they might be better.

Axel F is not Freestyle. It's Electro in the original early 80s definition, Electrophonic Funk.

Side A is phenomenal. Sound quality is superb. Punchy, clear and defined! Side B takes a serious nose dive with sound quality. I have a near mint copy and Side B sounds MUDDY. The difference is extremely noticeable—sounds unmastered. “Shoot Out” is a great track. Too bad the sound quality on Side B dampens it.

I have to agree with "curiositykilledshawn" about the b-side, "Shootout" - it is a classic slice of funky electro with crisp hi-hats and a prowling bassline that will have you shaking your bottom with reckless abandon, almost as if you have a banana up YOUR tailpipe!!

Axel F is the most iconic element of the Beverly Hills Cop series, without a doubt, but my favorite track from Harold Faltermeyer's is actually on Side B of this long extinct single. "Shootout" the track featured when Axel, Billy, and Taggart break into Victor Maitland's estate is far more funkier and upbeat tune. It's literally impossible to put the needle on Side B in a bad mood and not come away in a good mood. It's the kind of track that you just want to last for a whole hour. In fact, I might just mix my own version that does exactly that...

Having searched for a CD copy of the London mix (the best one as already mentioned) I couldn't find one, but there is an edited version on an old compilation 'the Greatest Hits of 1985'. Forgot how good it was!
