Notes
Originally released March 1985.
This time the album was financed by Brian Slagel (Show No Mercy was paid by band ) and recruited several experienced producers to help in the studio like: producer Ron Fair, who worked for Chrysalis Records, Bernie Grundman provided audio mastering, Eddy Schreyer worked on remastering, and Bill Metoyer, as sound engineer.
The lyrical theme again include hell and Satan, the repeating demonic-sounding voice in the intro of the title track played backwards reveals the repeated phrase " us", ending with "Welcome back"
"Hardening of the Arteries" on the album ends with a very similar section that makes up the beginning of the song "Hell Awaits" and is also one of the only Slayer songs to fade out on a continuous riff.
Artwork contains elements from "Approaching Centauri" by Enki Bilal, both featured in the July 1977 number 4 issue of the fantasy illustration magazine entitled "Heavy Metal".
To promote Hell Awaits, Slayer embarked on the Combat Tour with Exodus (6).
Rivadavia awarded the album four out of five stars, saying that it was "incredibly ahead of its time" and referred to it as "a mandatory item in the band's remarkable discography".
It has sold over 1,000,000 records worldwide according to Brian Slagel.

Some loud crackles throughout some of the songs. I still love this album though! -
I bought this pressing a few weeks after it came out from my LRS. My copy did not come with the lyric/photo insert or the fan club flyer. It just had the poly bag that most of the 80s metal LPs came with. I being pissed off that it did not come with the insert, because my good friends did. I we went to the library at school and I made a photo copy of my friends insert lyrics. I still have them in the LP. I feel a lot of the smaller record companies neglected to put a lot of care in making sure everything was in the package. Just a heads up if you find one in the wild with no insert.
-
Awful, the recording sounded about the same as on my cheap boombox and one of the channels went in and out several times on one side. Also very noisy during rewind/fast forward. Both tape and cassette were cheap so i threw them out. The J-Card has print on only one side and the other one is blank, no lyrics, band photo or anything. You'd think that f*ckin' METAL BLADE would make a decent reissue when much smaller labels put out really good sounding tapes and J-Cards with loads of info on them but NOPE!

This is the 1989 reissue of the 1985 ROADRUNNER pressing. Since the 1989 LP has a new cut, it sounds a little different than the 1985 version. It is a bit louder, has little more treble and a slightly narrower stereo image and was pressed on very quiet high quality vinyl. Both ROADRUNNER editions are the best-sounding versions on vinyl. -

This is indeed a great-sounding version, probably the best mastering of that album. Besides some very minor tape issues here and there, it sounds natural, powerful and dark - the way it should be. Nice stereo separation as well. Fantastic version !!! -

referencing Hell Awaits (LP, Album, Picture Disc, Reissue, Remastered, Gold With Blood Splatter) 3984-14031-1
Really poor sounding release. Avoid it if you actually want to listen to it, and not just putting it on your wall for decoration. -

Sounds great awesome color orange / w red splatter vinyl.
Mine only has a different hype sticker on front shrink wrap!

Edited 4 months agoWow. Incredible pressing.
Preferred to my OG CD I bought in late80/ early90s... which sounds compressed in comparison.
Same mix but has a warmer/ wider sound....large soundstage. 2LP. Dead quiet.
Had to order from Europe but worth it.
