Notes

The versions of "Too Bad" and "Shut Up" on this release are different than the ones on "Too Bad / Shut Up". The version of "UFO's Are Real" is likewise different from the versions on that song's accompanying single, and the version of "Truth Is Out Of Style" is different from that song's single.

From the official Nettwerk "Hell With The Lid Off" press release: "This offering of frenzied rap, industrial rhythms and hip hop beats will send the masses to the temples of dance. The selection of hymns for this Chapter confront middle-class America driven by his fascination with the psychotic urban jungle where the streets are inhabited with the so called 'freaks' of society. 'This fellow called Jesus wants to feel insanity, get inside the head of somebody crazed' — (UK) Melody Maker, Aug/89. You will find reality, the kind of reality that mankind suppresses and hides in the halls of institutions. MC 900 Ft Jesus along with DJ Zero take the disciplines of funk, rap and industrial hip hop transforming them into an entirely new beast."

The title “Hell With The Lid Off” is taken from the title given to a sermon delivered by an 8-year-old a compilation LP of some of his early evangelical preaching.

This whole album is awesome! But it’s “Real Black Angel” that ripped it up with our crowd back in the day! We booked MC 900 Ft Jesus to play our club in Glasgow in 1993, thinking he’d turn up with just himself and DJ Zero. Instead he turned up with a full band! Horn players and all! It was staggering! I wish I’d filmed it…!

I'm both surprised and not at all surprised that this isn't fetching big dollars. First heard on the Peel Sessions and the name stuck. Peel announced it as MC 900 FOOT Jesus and I have only just realised 25 years later that it might be featuring Jesus!
Found my copy in a charity shop and it's a travesty that people bought License to Ill in the millions but not this.(I think I got that in the charity shop too, CD and Vinyl) The Beasties sound like three squeeky nerds shouting at a drum machine. This is proper good stuff.

Absolute gem of an album..... Love what Mark continued on to do vocally on the subsequent releases, but the blend of styles on 'Hell With The Lid Off' is just too damn fresh!

It is really hard for me to give a 5 star review to an album with two or three bad or misplaced tracks, the reasons for this are the following tracks...
                Real Black Angel
                UFOs Are Real
                Shut Up
                I'm Going Straight to Heaven

These are all classic hip hop from the time, and should be celebrated. MC 900 on the beats and DJ Zero on the cut created one of the great albums of hip hop's Golden Age. I thank them for that!

Mark Griffin's debut album comes from such an oblique angle that it almost feels like outsider art—but it isn't. Mark, a trained trumpet player steeped in jazz, and who'd also played keyboards in rock bands before, was an avid and connected music fan. Working in an underground music store, he absorbed a lot of the great, weird experimental music, electronic, industrial, and talented hip hop of the mid-1980s. From these influences, out came this strange album: part electronic, part hip hop, part spoken word / poetry (storytelling really), and jazz.

The 1st of MC 900 Ft Jesus is more hiphop and techno than industrial but it does not fit in these categories. there's more to it. Fast funkloops, some kind of cheap, but good mixes with some nonsense raps and techno pattern.
