SPV midprice compilation, based on an idea by Manfred Schütz to push electronic music bands from Belgium and the UK.
Of course, it's not a genre compilation. It's a pure label compilation that has been criticized by Adrian Smith as a "label hype", right from the beginning. Bands such as Click Click and Parade Ground never saw themselves as a part of the movement, The Cassandra Complex and The Neon Judgement considered themselves as Electronic Rock groups, and Chris & Cosey produced SynthPop.
But what about The Weathermen? Most people didn't even recognize that their biggest hit "Poison" was nothing else than a sequencer-based Hip-Hop song with funky beats. A track like "Berlin" would have been more representative of the EBM genre.

A new version of Front 242's "Body to Body" was pretty much the only reason for buying it. If you are looking for similar compilations, try "Music from Belgium" and "Bodytronics", both released in 1988.

This is the compilation that really got me into proper old school EBM. I was a fan of Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb before I got this, but it really gave me a shopping list of things to look out for. Of course, it's not all EBM - including Chris & Cosey is a stretch - but still, it was an absolute eye-opener and started me on a path that has stretched my wallet, but pleasured my ears!

An absolutely stomping collection of classic tracks already when it came out, it has endured the test of time very good so far. However, even though this disc opened up my eyes to a world full of new music I would just like to caution people who are equally captured by this release. Most of the material here is without a doubt top notch, and as I learnt over the years hunting down the original releases, unfortunately many of the bands could not live up to this quality on their own recordings. Still, I can't think of a better way to discover the world of classic EBM!
