Tracey was a staff member for various publishing companies where he collaborated with composers such as Lewis Muir, George Meyer, Maceo Pinkard, Doris Tauber and Nat Vincent. He was also a charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
Tracey's most lasting song is “Them There Eyes” (co-written by Maceo Pinkard & Doris Tauber in 1930), a song made famous by Billie Holliday.
