Herman Lubinsky

Record producer, born 30 August 1896, Bradford, Connecticut, died 16 March 1974, Newark, N.J.

He established Newark's first radio station (WNJ) in the early 1920's. Prior to this, he was a wireless officer on the merchant ship, USS Carpethia, which sent distress messages while the Titanic was sinking. Later on, the survival list was sent to shore from that ship. He is most known as the founder of Savoy Records in 1939. He discovered and produced artists that would define the sound of R&B for their generation and set the stage for modern music. He operated the label up until a few months before his death. He was interred at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ.
