American music journalist (author of three music books), record company executive, and record producer known primarily for his long association with Capitol Records. Since 1974 chief copy editor of Billboard magazine in Los Angeles. He retired from Billboard in April 1984 intending to freelance from his home in Sherman Oaks, CA. He worked with many important figures in jazz and traditional popular music, including The Beatles for the American market.

In addition to his other activities, Dexter composed several jazz tunes, most of which were released under pseudonyms.
