Smith started his career as a receptionist, tape duper, and disc cutter at Harry Belafonte, among others.

Starting in 1987, he took a turn into recording jingles, first as chief engineer at HEA Productions, then at HB&B Productions and finally as a freelance engineer. During these years he recorded and mixed hundreds of jingles for companies such as Burger King, McDonald's, The Army, AT&T, Jello, Cheerios, Budweiser, and Ford.

From 1994 to 1997 Smith mixed the music for a cartoon show, The Tick for Fox. Since then he has worked as a music mixer on several other cartoon shows, including Courage the Cowardly Dog, Space Racers, and Peg + Cat.
