The son of a musician, Robert Aschenbrenner, Ash was a baby when his family emigrated to the United States in October 1891. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

From 1921-1925 Ash was Musical Director at the Grenada Theatre in San Francisco, where he established himself as one of the foremost orchestra directors in the country. In 1925 he was appointed Director of the McVickers Theatre in Chicago, where he immediately became a national figure through the success of his original and distinctive presentations.

Paul Robert Ash recorded several hit songs: "Rememb'ring" (Brunswick, 1924), with Kay Kyser's theme "Thinking of You."
